A Step toward Global Awareness: An Examination of USBBY Outstanding International Books for the Primary Grades
Liang, Lauren Aimonette; Watkins, Naomi M.; Williams, Virginia S.
Journal of Children's Literature, v39 n1 p16-24 Spr 2013
This article describes results from an examination of common characteristics in the award-winning United States Board on Books for Young People (USBBY) Outstanding International Books for Grades K-2 from 2006 to 2012. Books nominated for the USBBY Outstanding International Books List must be currently available in the United States market. The books are reviewed by a committee from the USBBY, who evaluated them based on both content and presentation of the literature, including "artistic and literary merit, originality or creativity of approach, distinctiveness of topic, uniqueness of origin, and qualities that engage and appeal to children." The chosen books are placed on the final list, which is divided into four categories that are quite useful for educators: grades K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12. This article looks specifically at the lists for grades K-2. (Contains 4 tables.)
