The Evaluation of Composition Instruction. Second Edition.
Davis, Barbara Gross; And Others
To address the need for information on techniques and theory on the evaluation of composition instruction, this book has been revised to incorporate the most recent thinking on the topic. It begins with suggestions for how readers of different backgrounds can make best use of the book, followed by an introduction. The first chapter deals with basic evaluation concepts, and contains 12 subsections explaining the different types of evaluation, their phases, and implementation. The second chapter covers issues in composition instruction, ways of describing composition instruction, and professional development activities. Aspects of evaluation are described in the third chapter, with 11 subsections on topics such as (1) student writing performance, beliefs, attitudes, and other student indicators; (2) the process of teaching writing; (3) teacher attitudes and beliefs about writing, professional activities, and leadership roles; (4) training activities; and (5) program adminstration, costs, side effects and replications. The fourth chapter is concerned with assembling evaluation components, and consists of vignettes and a case study for evaluating a writing program. The reference section includes a select bibliography related to evaluation of composition instruction, case studies of writing project evaluations and local writing assessments, technical reports of the Bay Area Writing Project, and instruments for evaluating composition instruction. A glossary and appendix conclude the volume. (SKC)
