The principal plays a key role in student success. The employment interview is a critical element in the principal selection process. This study examined the interview structure and the content of the interview questions that districts used in their principal search for the 2011-2012 school year. The research-based practices for interview structure that enhance predictive validity and the principal leadership practices associated with student achievement as delineated by Marzano, Waters, and McNulty (2005) served as the filters for data analysis. Thirty-one school district hiring officials responded to a questionnaire that identified the various elements of interview structure. Eighteen of these also submitted thirty sets of interview questions that officials purported to ask candidates in their principal search. Descriptive statistics and content analysis were used to analyze questionnaire responses and interview question documents. The findings in this study indicated that the participants' principal selection interviews had a high degree of structure, particularly in the area of question standardization. Of lesser use by the participants were the research-based practices of rating each response against an ideal response or rubric, mathematically reaching an overall interview rating, and interviewer training. Participants favored situational or other type interview questions, rather than the experience-based type. For the question content, participants focused on several principal leadership responsibilities associated with student achievement, but did not appear to use the 21 responsibilities of Marzano et al.
