Filling the Educator Pipeline: Recruiting Male Family and Consumer Sciences Teachers
Godfrey, Roxie V.; Manis, Kerry T.
Journal of Family and Consumer Sciences, v109 n2 p48-53 Spr 2017
To encourage males to enter the teaching field, specifically in family and consumer sciences (FCS), FCS professionals should participate in recruitment initiatives aimed at males. Administrators, teacher educators, career counselors, and FCS teachers can play a significant role in this comprehensive and systematic effort. This paper adopts the social learning theory perspective to focus on FCS teacher recruitment initiatives targeting males. This theory comprises six major steps or elements: cognitive factors, observational learning, behavioral capability, self-efficacy, reciprocal determinism, and reinforcement. These recruitment initiatives benefit students, FCS professionals, and educators for the advancement and sustainability of the FCS teaching profession.
