Assign Roles to Get Literature Circles Rolling
Curriculum Review, v45 n4 p7 Dec 2005
This article briefly describes a role-playing exercise designed to break the ice in a classroom literature circle from The Ultimate Small-Group Reading How-To Book: Building Comprehension through SmallGroup Instruction, written by Gail Saunders-Smith. The members of a literature circle participate in the group discussion according to the responsibilities associated with their roles. Their responsibilities focus the reader's attention on certain literary elements and aspects of the writer's craft. The information the students provide becomes the discussion points. Each time a member makes a point, he or she must direct the other members to a place in the text that illustrates the point. At first, students need to learn not to interfere with the responsibilities of the other roles. After each member shares what he or she noted, the discussion director asks if any students have anything to add or say. Eventually, however, the roles will erode and students will just discuss the whole text. Some of the roles and responsibilities in literature circles are examined in this article.
