STDs and HIV: A Guide for Today's Young Adults. Instructor's Guide. Student Manual.
Yarber, William L.
The curriculum for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) presented in these two manuals is designed for grades 7-12. Six sections of the student manual, each focused on a particular "STD/HIV Fact," are designed to help young adults learn how to avoid STDs, how STDs are and are not communicated, what to do to keep from getting STDs, how to recognize STD symptoms, where to get STD medical care and information, how to get partners to treatment, and how to help control STDs. Each of these sections ends with a "Life Situation" problem related to the particular topic discussed, and students are challenged to think out their own approaches to the problem before turning to the section called "Possible Solutions to Life Situations" for the recommended answers. Also included in the text are pre- and post-self-tests entitled "Discovering What I Know" and Discovering What I Believe," STD/HIV prevention action checklist, STD/HIV avoidance skills activities, charts of female and male reproductive systems with descriptions of each part, summary charts of important STDs, a pronouncing glossary, a STD/HIV summary sheet, and sources of STD/HIV help. The instructor's guide is organized into four chapters as follows: (1) The Philosophy of School STD/HIV Education; (2) Suggested Lesson Plans; (3) Learning Opportunities; and (4) Test Questions. Two appendices provide handouts (Sources of STD/HIV Help and STD/HIV Summary Sheet and Guidelines for Condom Use) and 16 worksheets. (LL)
