This book describes the history of the University of Hawaii and higher education in Hawaii in the 20th century. Main topics include educational leaders, faculty, students, program development, educational expansion, and historical context. Part 1 traces the development of the Manoa Campus and the university system throughout the century. Included are early photos and personal recollections. Chapters in Part 1 include: (1) "Origins and Early Years: 1907-1946"; (2) "Becoming a Statewide System: 1947-1968"; (3) "Experiencing Maturity: 1969-1995." Part 2 focuses on the development and history of the colleges and programs at the Manoa campus. Each chapter is devoted to a particular discipline and is authored by members of the university community. Chapter topics include Hawaiian studies, Pacific Islands programs, Asian programs, engineering, tropical agriculture, arts and sciences, undergraduate honors, research units, biological sciences, astronomy, performing arts, summer session, and the university press. Part 3 discusses the development of branch campuses and community colleges. Two chapters are devoted to the history of the Hilo and West Oahu campuses of the university and a third chapter describes the development of Hawaii's community colleges. A sub-section is devoted to each of the seven community colleges and the Employment Training Center. The book contains five appendices: Presidents of the university; regents; student enrollment; degrees conferred; and faculty and staff. Contains 35 references plus notes on other sources. (RDG)
