Progressive Achievement Tests in Reading: Comprehension & Vocabulary. Teacher's Handbook. Second Edition.
Australian Council for Educational Research, Hawthorn.
The teacher handbook for Progressive Achievement Tests (PATs) in Reading presents an overall description of these survey tests in reading comprehension and vocabulary knowledge for school years 3 to 9. There are two alternative forms of each test: (1) the Reading Comprehension tests are designed to measure two major aspects of reading skills (factual and inferential comprehension of prose material); and (2) the Reading Vocabulary tests are designed to measure knowledge of terminology (word knowledge). The PATs are intended primarily to assist teachers in determining the level of development attained by their students in these basic skills. The test results should help teachers make decisions about the kinds of teaching materials, methods, and programs to be used in their classes. The tests can be hand or machine scored. Advice on interpretation is included. Twenty-eight tables of norms, from reference groups drawn from Year 3 through Year 9 classes in Australia and tested in November 1984, are provided to convert raw scores to either percentiles or stanines.
