Alcohol Policies and Practices on College and University Campuses. NASPA Monograph Series Volume 7.
Sherwood, Joan S., Ed.
Following the alcohol-related death of a student at Western Washington University in 1984, the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA), initiated a study of guidelines for dealing with alcohol on college and university campuses nationwide. Suggestions are made for establishing effective policies and opening lines of communication. After an introduction by Tom Goodale, six chapters written by various members of the higher education community are presented. Chapters are listed as: "A Historical Perspective: Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism in America and on Our Campuses" (Joseph M. Fischer); "Learning, Libation, Liability" (Mary Lou Fenili); "Campus Responses to Changes in the Drinking Age" (Caryl K. Smith); "College Students' Drinking Patterns and Problems" (Ruth C. Engs and David J. Hanson); "Current Issues in Effective Alcohol Education Programming" (Alan D. Berkowitz and H. Wesley Perkins); and "Alcohol Policy Development: A Necessary Component for a Comprehensive Alcohol Education Program on Campus" (Gerardo M. Gonzalez). Inter-Association Task Force Model Campus Alcohol Policy Guidelines are appended. Tables include data on: server liability; liability based on identity of person served; hazing definitions, liability, and penalties; review of the legal drinking age in the 50 states; problems due to drinking among those who drink once a year or more; alcohol education program interventions; and use of alcohol surveys in alcohol education programs. References follow each chapter. (SM)
