German women have achieved much of which their mothers only dreamed; however, there is still plenty of work to be done in the fight to secure equal rights. Women are becoming more involved in politics. For example, today 8.6% of parliament is female compared to 7.1% in 1949. German women are not drafted for military service, but they can now volunteer as doctors in the federal defense forces. German trade unions and jobs in the cultural sphere remain largely the domain of men. Since 1978 there has been sexual equality in the pastoral office of the German Evangelical church. The wives of German presidents have used their positions not to increase their prestige in society, but for welfare work. Of the 18.7 million German women between the ages of 15 and 59, 10 million work, mostly in textile, cleaning, social care, and health service vocations. More women are attending college, however, and receiving professional training. The German women's movement has a strong social commitment, sponsoring women's centers, bookshops, publications, and magazines.
