In June 2013, the third World Evolution Summit convened on San Cristóbal, hosting scientists from around the world (Paz-y-Miño-C and Espinosa 2013)--neither the first nor likely the last gathering of biologists on these remote islands. Clearly, both locals and an international audience perceive Galápagos as figuring prominently in discourse about evolutionary biology. The authors suggest that these evolutionary biologists and science educators draw their attention to the following facts: 87% of the biology teachers in the islands state that they enjoy teaching about evolution; 89% are proud of the connections between Galápagos and evolution; and 95% confirm that they specifically enjoy teaching about Galápagos and the history of evolutionary thought. Also, 95% of these biology teachers would like to know more about Galápagos and the history of evolutionary thought. So, although there are many barriers to teaching and learning evolution, in Galápagos the surroundings and the islands' history have already provided an ideal impetus for discussion. Specifically, biology teachers in Galápagos are proud of the connection between their home and evolution, and they realise their livelihoods depend on this link.
