Risky Behavior, Ecstasy, and Education
Callier, Heather H.
ProQuest LLC, Psy.D. Dissertation, Alliant International University
Ecstasy is a risky behavior that continues to be a concern in the education system today. The review of the Ecstasy literature focused on the definition of risky behavior, prevalence, and other basis aspects of Ecstasy; discovering life events that are associated with Ecstasy use, the function of this behavior, interventions for substance abuse, parenting, and educational interventions. The review revealed that in 2001, the Partnership Attitude Tracking Study (PATS) shows that teens' lifetime use of MDMA more than doubled from 1995 (5.0%) to 2001 (12.0%) and is now equal with that of cocaine, crack, and LSD, and higher than that of heroin. This thorough review of Ecstasy specifically related to Ecstasy and educators revealed that many educators need further information regarding Ecstasy. The current researcher developed a pamphlet about Ecstasy for educators that was then evaluated by Ecstasy experts. Ten experts responded and indicated that the pamphlet was both accurate and needed in the field of education. After changes were made to the pamphlet utilizing the expert's recommendations, the pamphlet was submitted to educators for evaluation. The next phase of the evaluation involved 10 educators including school psychologists, school counselors, administers, and teachers who provided feedback. Most of the educator's responses indicated that the pamphlet was easy to use and comprehend. Educators stated there is a need for further information regarding substance abuse and they liked the resource section. Overall educator and expert responses indicated that the pamphlet "Ecstasy: Do You Know the Truth" is needed and accurate.
