"Shadow" Deviations in Colleges and Universities: Facets of the Problem
Fedorenko, L.P.
Russian Education and Society, v48 n8 p92-95 Aug 2006
E.O. Leont'eva's article "Education from the Seamy Underside: Experience from a Pilot Survey of "Shadow" Relations in Colleges and Universities," published in the December 2004 issue of the journal "Sotsiologicheskie issledovanii," described informal practices for getting grades. The empirical base was the findings of a pilot survey of college students in the Far Eastern region. This article presents the differences and the similarities of the findings from Leont'eva's report to that of the authors' sociological survey among college students in a small town in Krasnodar Krail from January through April 2005. Basing from the authors' study, the proportion of students who received grades that did not reflect their actual knowledge was quite close--44 percent and 39 percent, respectively. But whereas the 44 percent in Leont'eva's survey represented people who had received or who had tried to get a grade in exchange for a "bribe," in the authors' case the 39 percent represents absolutely all students who had ever taken advantage of an instructor's "leniency." Moreover, such "leniency" resulted from giving money or a gift to an instructor for just 19 percent of the respondents (9.2 percent in the institution as a whole); the rest confined themselves just to saying thanks, doing some kind of work for the institution, acting in a sponsorship capacity for the institution, or not expressing thanks in any form for an undeserved grade.
