Designed to help students understand basic election issues, campaign practices, election processes, and voting procedures, this curriculum guide contains information about U.S. politics in relation to the concept of freedom and historical material on the founding of U.S. political parties, Jeffersonian democracy, and political parties after 1850. The function of political parties is explained, along with information about the two major parties, third parties, and the structure of political parties. Other sections describe: (1) financing campaigns and elections; (2) factors affecting U.S. voter turnout; (3) methods of voting; (4) the nomination process; (5) the election process; (6) the electoral college; (7) campaign techniques; and (8) election and political reforms. National, Indiana, Vanderburgh (Indiana) County and its townships, and Evansville (Indiana) city public offices are described, and the terms of office, salaries, and duties are listed. Sections are provided that explain 12 selected presidential elections, present a glossary of terms, and list suggested class activities and discussion questions.
