Connect the Book. George Washington's Teeth
Brodie, Carolyn S.
School Library Media Activities Monthly, v21 n6 p47-48 Feb 2005
February celebrates both National Children's Dental Health Month and President's Day (February 21), so this month's "Connect the Book" column features a book with connections to both events. George Washington, the first President of the United States (1789-1797) and known as the "Father of Our Country," had a serious dental health problem that began for him at the age of twenty-two. His false teeth were made of many things including elephant ivory and walrus tusk, but never from wood as one story of Washington is sometimes told. "George Washington's Teeth" was written by Deborah Chandra and Madeleine Comora and illustrated by Brock Cole (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2003). A four-page timeline that features portraits of Washington and a photograph of a pair of his dentures adds much detail to this story. A bibliography cites eleven sources of information for the timeline and text including documents that use Washington's own diary entries and letters. This article also includes suggestions for other books, activities, and websites that provide further information about George Washington and dental health.
