Proprioception in Dance: A Comparative Review of Understandings and Approaches to Research
Barlow, Rachel
Research in Dance Education, v19 n1 p39-56 2018
Proprioception is an ongoing topic of interest in dance research. Yet 'proprioception' can have a wide range of meanings, and therefore is studied in many different ways. This research presents a review of existing studies of proprioception in dance. The review comprised 4 main stages: stage (1) background research; stage (2) proposing a working definition of proprioception in the form of a 'Proprioception Continuum'; stage (3) data search and literature review; and stage (4) analysis of results and comparative analysis. In particular, the different ways in which proprioception research is approached were explored and analysed. The review is not quantitative, but instead aims to provide a general overview of proprioception in dance research which emphasises particularly noteworthy topics. Five databases were searched using a range of search terms. In total 145 articles were analysed in full to answer the research questions. Results showed that research spans 25 years, and has a wide range of focuses. The review concluded that proprioception is now a broad concept under which are many directions for research, influenced by researchers' own theories, beliefs, and questions. Due to proprioception being studied in various subjects, the specifics of dance should be emphasised and maintained in future research.
