Teachers' Guide: Rural Crime Prevention Guide for Young People.
Wurschmidt, Todd N.; Phillips, G. Howard
Crimes against property (vandalism, theft, and burglary) committed by teenagers are increasing at an alarming rate in rural America. The content of this manual aims to reverse this pernicious trend by providing rural Ohio secondary students with preventative education which supplements existing civics and government courses. Hopefully, presenting relevant material will command the attention and interest of the teenagers and will motivate individuals towards formulating good attitudes toward crime and its prevention and respect for one another and the law. Topics addressed by the nine session plans are: understanding society's need for laws; the origin and development of law enforcement; who commits rural crime; attitudes and conceptions of crime; the victims of rural crime; the consequences of committing a crime; and individual, family, and community plans for action. Topics are selected to give students knowledge of pertinent information. Parts of the sessions are devoted to discussion of causes; some to suggesting solutions. The manual provides teachers with maximum flexibility, including more material than can be covered in one hour, and encourages instructors to supply individual flavor through addition of personal knowledge and experiences. Illustrations, lesson plans suitable for distribution to students, games, role plays, discussion topics, suggested homework and activity projects, visual aids, and additional reference sources are presented in most session outlines.
