Reviews the historical implications of the Protestant-Catholic division and analyzes the current distribution of Catholics in the national population. Catholic immigrants, who came to the big northeastern cities, were regarded by the rural Protestant settlers as representing negative aspects of an urban-industrial state. Today Catholic groups are not only found in the northeast and upper midwest but also in Florida, Colorado, and the west coast. (Author/AV)
