Identifying the Culturally Different Gifted Student.
Chambers, Jack A.; Barron, Frank
The study was designed to provide a relatively simple method of identifying gifted Mexican-American elementary school children, using as Ss approximately 298 Mexican-Americans (in grades 3-6) from both urban and rural schools. Ss were rated by present and former teachers on traits found to be characteristic of highly creative and talented individuals (Student Check List), and on the American Association of Mental Deficiency Adaptive Behavior Scale. Ss were qiven the IPAT (Institute for Personality and Ability Testing) Culture Fair Intelligence Test, the Wallach-Kagan Tests of Creativity, the Barron-Welsh Art Scale, the Barron Symbol Equivalence Test, and the Personal Adjective Check List. All tests except the Personal Adjective Check List were found to give fairly consistent results when compared to teacher ratings. Sequential screening batteries were developed which require relatively little testing time while yielding reasonable levels of both effectiveness and efficiency. Appendixes include the Student Check List, the Wallach-Kagan Tests, the Barron Symbol Equivalence Test, the Personal Adlective Check List, and an instruction set for identifying the culturally different gifted student.
