Separating Fact from Fiction: Increasing Running Speed

From a biomechanical point of view, this article explores the common belief that one must increase stride length and frequency in order to increase running speed. The limb length, explosive power, and anaerobic capacity of the athlete, as well as the type of running (sprinting vs. long distance) must be considered before making such a generalization. In addition to running distance and the unique physical and anthropometric characteristics of the runner, factors such as forward lean, upper-body motion, core strength, and flexibility exert an influence on running speed. Therefore, professionals should look at each student or athlete as an individual and should consider several biomechanical factors when teaching and coaching. (Contains 2 figures.)
