This instructor's guide contains materials for teaching the heating and air conditioning specialist component of a competency-based instructional program for students preparing for employment in the automotive service trade. It is based on the National Institute of Automotive Service Excellence task lists. The six instructional units presented contain materials on the following topics: introduction to air conditioning, refrigeration system, air conditioning mechanical and electrical controls, heating mechanical and electrical controls, heating, and automatic and semiautomatic controls. Each unit includes the following: performance objectives, suggested activities, pretests, information sheets, assignment sheets, job sheets and their practical tests, written tests, and answers to all tests and assignments. Some units also include handouts, supplements, transparency masters, and activity sheets. Transparency masters, handouts, pretests, practical tests, and thirteen tests are included in the instructor edition only. All unit components focus on measurable and observable learning outcomes, and all units incorporate activities to help students master basic skills required for the workplace. In addition, each unit includes information on the following: using the materials for independent study, amounts of material to cover in single class periods, skills that must be demonstrated, supplies/equipment needed, amounts of class time required for demonstrations and student practice, supplementary materials to order, and resource people to contact.
