Two intruments for evaluating the school plant are presented in this monograph. The first enables districts to appraise the effectiveness of school maintenance programs and plan for future maintenance needs. The eight aspects of maintenance covered relate to the exterior of the building, the interior, special classrooms, the electrical system, the plumbing system, the heating and ventilating system, the air conditioning system, and the roof. A separate checklist is provided as a guide for assessing each aspect. The second instrument--for general appraisal of the school site--can be used when considering locations for new facilities, selecting sites for closing, or determining the need for landscaping or structural changes. Both instruments use a five-point rating scale. The monograph also makes recommendations concerning who should do the inspection and discusses how the results should be interpreted and used. (PGD)
