The Prevalence of Paid School Psychology Internships in the United States
Prus, Joseph S.; Colvard, Hayley; Swerdlik, Mark E.
Communique, v43 n3 p 1, 28-30 Nov 2014
The internship is a critical component in the graduate preparation of school psychologists. A comprehensive, supervised internship provides interns with the opportunity to integrate, apply, and enhance the professional knowledge and skills they have learned and developed through their school psychology graduate programs. Phelps and Swerdlik (2011) outline a number of significant factors impacting school psychology internships at both the specialist and doctoral levels, including: (1) the requirement for systematic and direct assessments of student competencies; (2) the shortage of American Psychological Association (APA)-accredited doctoral internships with a school component; (3) ensuring competent internship supervision; (4) ensuring graduate preparation programs approve internship sites consistent with National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) "Standards for Graduate Preparation of School Psychologists" and APA standards; and (4) whether interns receive salaries or stipends. The NASP requires that specialist-level programs include a 1,200-hour internship completed on a full-time basis over 1 academic year or half-time basis over 2 years. Doctoral programs must include an internship of at least 1,500 hours in order to meet NASP standards, although many state psychology boards require more than 1,500 hours to be licensed for independent practice. The purpose of the present study was to determine the prevalence of paid school psychology internships and their associated pay using data available through the NASP National School Psychology Program Database. The authors also examined variations by degree level and region.
