Cultural Competency Perceptions: American Indian/Alaskan Native College Students and Academic Advisors

This qualitative case study examined the perceptions of American Indian/Alaskan Native (AI/AN) undergraduate students. Specifically, the study researched if AI/AN college students attending Southeastern Oklahoma State University (SOSU) perceived academic advising as more useful if they were engaged by culturally competent academic advisors as opposed to academic advisors that were not culturally sensitive or competent. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to obtain data that would give a better understanding of the needs of AI/AN undergraduate students. The study consisted of 15 AI/AN undergraduate students that were attending SOSU and five academic advisors that were providing advising services to students at the university. Data was collected and analyzed and triangulated from 15 student responses to 10 open ended interview questions as developed by Museus and Ravello (2010) and assisted by the psychological, social, and cultural (PSC) conceptual framework of Thompson, Johnson-Jennings, and Nitzarim, (2013). Additionally, five academic advisors participated in a Native American Acculturation Scale (NAAS) twenty-question survey. The NAAS was developed by Garrett and Pichette, (2000) and adapted by Reynolds, Sodano, Ecklund, and Guyker, (2012) from two existing scales that measured acculturation of Mexican Americans and Asians. Data was collected from 15 student interviews that were transcribed and coded into three themes. Findings from the themes suggested that AI/AN students attending SOSU perceived their academic advisors as being helpful, socially and culturally knowledgeable, and available for emotional support. Recommendations to the university have been made to further the advancement of academic advisors services to AI/AN students.
