Annual Consumer Education "Catch-Up" Conference. (3rd, Washington, D.C., March 2-3, 1978).
Office of Consumer Affairs, Washington, DC.
As stated in the introductory summary to these proceedings, the goals of the third annual national conference for consumer education were (1) to provide an introduction to resources and materials for persons new to the field of consumer education, (2) to highlight successful programs, (3) to provide up-to-date information on consumer legislation and issues, and (4) to promote involvement and action. Included in the proceedings are summaries of the individual workshops, panels, and speeches that took place during the conference; the major conclusions which emerged from it; an evaluation of the conference; the names of organizations providing consumer education exhibits; and a list of participants (500 educators, community leaders, federal, state, and local consumer affairs officials, advocates, industry representatives, and journalists). The thrust of the five major conference conclusions reported was that consumer education must have more than a "savvy shopper" image and that efforts to promote the need for citizen involvement and action must also be a major priority. As concluded in the evaluation section, the question of whether or not the conference met its goals remains unanswered since only fifty-nine of the participants completed the evaluation. (VB)
