Academic Library Service to Disabled Students: Today and Tomorrow.
Stone, Elizabeth W.
The presentation focuses on the status of disabled persons in the world, notes progress made in improved living conditions for the disabled, and considers implications for libraries serving disabled clients. Services currently offered in academic libraries are described, as are goals related to four aims specified by the United Nations during the Decade of Disabled Persons (prevention, services, participation, and awareness). Among prevention related services cited are efforts to reduce opportunities for injury and to maintain safety plans for fire or other emergencies. Library services for the disabled are discussed, including orientation for students regarding equipment and procedures. Librarians are urged to be aware of trends in information services for and about disabled persons. The aim of participation is addressed in terms of a program to give disabled students temporary or part time employment in the library system as well as integration of information on disabilities into the basic master's course in library science. The fourth aim, public awareness, is examined in terms of direct and indirect methods of community education. Recommendations include emphasis on marketing and dissemination aspects. (CL)
