SAT Monitor Program. High School Students View the SAT and College Admissions Process. Report on Wave of Completed Questionnaires Associated with December 1977 SAT Administration.
Response Analysis Corp., Princeton, NJ.
College applicants taking the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) and the Test of Standard Written English (TSWE) were surveyed regarding the tests, college admission in general, and the communications received concerning the test and their scores. Separate questionnaires were administered before taking the SAT or TSWE, after taking the test, and after receiving the test scores. It was found that the students generally expected to attend a large, public or state-supported institution. Seventy percent of the students reported a choice of college major; frequently named were business and commerce (both sexes), social science (females), and engineering (males). Criteria which students felt should be used for college admission included grades and SAT scores. Before taking the SAT, 56% of the respondents reported nervousness and anxiety. Most students neither enjoyed nor disliked taking the SAT or TSWE; were not surprised with their score; felt that it was fair; and rated the verbal section of the SAT as most difficult. Respondents reported confusion about the colleges' use of test scores, about their percentile rank, and about TSWE scores. When proposed that the SAT should be discontinued, 46% disagreed, 22% agreed, and 31% weren't sure. The questionnaires and results are appended. (GDC)
