Mass Media and Development in Indonesia.
Alfian; And Others
A large-scale pre-television benchmark survey was undertaken in five Indonesian provinces in 1976, prior to the launching of Indonesia's telecommunications satellite, to provide data for comparison with the results of a survey of the same villages to be carried out in 1982, 5 years after the introduction of television, to assess its long-term social impact on rural Indonesia. The focus of this research is how television contributes to the acquisition of knowledge and technology, new attitudes and behavioral orientations, new aspirations and role expectations, and to the adoption of agricultural innovations, health and hygienic practices, and community participation. This collection of technical reports is based on findings from the entire sample. Preliminary chapters cover the study setting, sample selection and rsearch methods, and provide an in-depth analysis of the use of mass media by the survey respondents. Remaining chapters then analyze the relationship between mass media usage and values and aspirations, economic behavior, knowledge of agricultural technology and adoption of innovative farming practices, knowledge and practice of family planning, adoption of new health practices, participation in community life, ethnic relations, and knowledge about development programs. A final chapter summarizes conclusions from the benchmark survey and assesses the impact which might be expected from television's advent. (LMM)
