The purpose of this research was to determine how to identify, recruit, develop, and retain suitable adjunct faculty in rural community colleges in Ohio. The research problem resulted from a limited availability of potential faculty possessing the required credentials and andragogical training in Ohio's rural and Appalachian areas. Research questions addressed methods to identify and recruit adjunct faculty, ways to better orient and prepare adjuncts, methods to increase quality instruction, and factors that keep adjuncts teaching in community colleges. Utilizing a sequential mixed methods approach, the triangulation model included surveys of chief academic officers and adjunct faculty and interviews of adjunct faculty; correlations were used to quantify relationships; and an inductive approach was applied to summarize, link, and create a model. This methodology ensured more objectivity, provided a more in-depth study, and demonstrated a greater level of validity. The findings revealed recommendations for how to identify and recruit potential adjuncts, how to provide and support andragogical preparation for the classroom, and how to retain qualified adjuncts by providing a satisfying experience. The statistical analysis showed nonsignificant differences in the perceptions of the chief academic officers compared to those of the adjunct faculty. On completion of the study, these findings of best practices will be compiled into a handbook for administrators to use as a model in the process. This handbook will be beneficial to Ohio's rural community colleges and other rural community colleges across America in an effort to bring about positive social change and support academic excellence.
