This case study of an Egyptian school sought to explore staff perceptions of which characteristics of a professional learning community, as posited by Hord (1997), were found in ABC School's culture. Educational staff (52 (100%)) completed the School Professional Staff as Learning Community Questionnaire (SPSLCQ) and 18 (35%) educational staff participated in individual interviews for the purpose of data collection. Non-participatory observations were made over a four-day period. Additional data were gathered from school documents. Quantitative data from the questionnaire were entered into the SPSS statistical program using the SPSLCQ's 17 descriptors as predetermined codes. The qualitative data from the interviews and observations were entered into HyperRESEARCH software for analysis using the same predetermined codes. The findings of this case study indicated that ABC School was a developing professional learning community. The data from the questionnaire revealed that the two highest professional learning community characteristics were visions for improvement focusing on students, teaching, and learning; and staff discussions relating to quality teaching and student learning. The lowest two characteristics were the frequency with which staff met to discuss educational issues; and staff visiting classrooms of peers. These results were confirmed by the interview comments and the observations. At ABC School, the staff perceived the 17 professional learning community characteristics to be evident either some of the time or more than some of the time, but not all of the time. The study concluded with recommendations for further study using this case study format at other Egyptian or Middle Eastern schools as well as conducting a multiple-school study using the Arabic version of the SPSLCQ.
