The Arab American National Museum: Cultural Competency Training in Post-9/11 America
Freij, Janice Ann
Journal of Museum Education, v36 n1 p19-28 Spr 2011
In the aftermath of the tragic events of September 11th, 2001, Arab and Muslim Americans, already suffering from negative stereotyping, find themselves subject to greater hostility. The Arab American National Museum (AANM) has discovered that professional development and cultural competency training opportunities for law enforcement personnel, educators, health professionals, and government officials dispels myths, alleviates fears, and prepares professionals. This article addresses how the AANM has successfully established itself as a resource for cross-cultural bridge building through these programs. (Contains 4 notes.)
