This volume of essays sets out to consider the contributions that higher education and industry, understood in the widest sense, could make to improving the quality of students' learning and to increasing its relevance to the needs of employment. The second part treats public and private funding in "Industry Contributions to Higher Education Funding and Their Effects" (Gareth Williams and Cari Loder) and"The 'US Model' for Higher Education: Structure and Finance" (Keith Tribe). Graduates and the needs of employment are the topic of Part 3 which includes "Graduates of Higher Education: What Do Employers Expect in the 1990s?" (Peter Meyer-Dohm) and "Personal Transferable Skills for Employment: The Role of Higher Education" (Ann Bailey). The final section looks at changes in culture and organization with "The Shifting Culture of Higher Education" (John Fielden), "A Responsive Higher Education System" (Anne Jones), and "Apocalypse Now?
