The Educational Research Centre for the Economics of Education and Training (CEET) conducted a survey focusing on lifelong learning and the world of work, particularly on the need for retraining and upgrading of skills and knowledge. The survey involved five different approaches: surveys of the available quantitative and qualitative material; a survey of key stakeholders; a survey of the experience for disadvantaged groups and individuals; and eight case studies. Some possible future directions were indicated in the final chapter of the survey report to the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI), the Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) and the Australian National Training Authority (ANTA). To elicit the views of key stakeholders a full day symposium was held in Melbourne, Australia on May 16, 2002. This monograph presents the symposium proceedings. Following a survey overview (Chris Selby Smith), the symposium included six sessions. Session One, Employee and Trade Union Perspectives: Current Experience, Opportunities for Improvement, included presentations by Therese Bryant, Keith Harvey, Rex Hewett, and Julian Teicher. Session Two, Employer and Employer Organisations' Perspectives: Current Experience, Opportunities for Improvement, included presentations by Gary Collins, Peter Glynn, Pam Jonas, and Maria Tarrant. Session Three, Governments: Steering and Rowing, included presentations by Peter Grant, Paul Byrne, Robin Shreeve, Madeleine Woolley, and Geoff Creek. Session Four, The Three Perspectives: Commonalities and Differences, included presentations by Rex Hewett, Steve Balzary, and Moira Scollay. Session Five, Other Initiatives: A Wide Diversity, included presentations by Greg Lewis, Jenny Duncan, Thit Tieu. Peter Waterhouse, and Bruce Wilson. A Discussion period led Chris Selby Smith and Fran Ferrier concluded each of the first five sessions. Session Six, Summary of Main Themes, was presented by Kaye Schofield.
