Lifelong Learning for Adults through Libraries.
Conroy, Barbara; And Others
This report contains six presentations by members of the Task Force on Libraries and Lifelong Learning. "Library Programming for Groups with Special Needs" describes the library as a local alternative education agency, complementing school systems, and ways libraries serve adults with special needs through outreach and special programming efforts. "Adult Literacy and Adult Basic Education Through Libraries" focuses on services for the illiterate adult and out of school youth. "Learner's Advisory Services in Libraries" sketches an effort to draw the self-motivated adult learner to the public library and to prepare library decision-maker and staff to meet the new level of needs this would bring. "Free Universities, Learning Referral Centers and Libraries" explores these educational institutions for the independent non-traditional learner and describes several communities where they work closely with the public libraries gaining mutual benefit. Examples show different patterns of cooperation possible. "Community Education and Libraries" seeks to describe the elusive concept of community education and the roles libraries have played in community education programming. "Public Libraries as Centers for Information about Learning and Careers" describes libraries as educational brokers and information centers for educational information. (YLB)
