The Graduate School Funding Handbook.
Hamel, April Vahle; And Others
This guide for prospective graduate students offers information on funding graduate study in the United States and abroad through scholarships, loans, and other programs. The first chapter treats graduate degrees generally; types of financial aid, particularly institutional aid; and strategies for application success. The second chapter begins the discussion of external funding, or funds that come from outside the student's university. These include money from government agencies, private industry, and not-for-profit foundations. This chapter looks at types of external funding, and offers application hints. The third chapter presents general information and advice on writing winning applications for individual training fellowships. It also details 11 specific fellowship opportunities providing information on administrative agency, address, deadlines, month of notification, number of awards, average number of applicants, amount, application form, purpose and restrictions, length of award, eligibility, application requirements, and comments and advice. Subsequent chapters follow this format offering general information on a category of aid and specific information on particular programs. Chapter 4 treats study or research abroad fellowships and describes 10 specific programs. Chapter 5 covers research grants and describes eight programs in detail. Chapter 6 covers eight dissertation fellowship programs. Chapter 7 covers 15 postdoctoral fellowship programs. All chapters contain references for further reading. Includes an index. (JB)
