An Ethical Decision-Making Framework for Community College Administrators
Oliver, Diane E.; Hioco, Barbara
Community College Review, v40 n3 p240-254 Jul 2012
The purpose of this article is to describe a decision-making framework developed for use by community college administrators and higher education faculty members who teach graduate courses in community college administration or leadership. The rationale for developing a decision-making approach that integrates ethics and critical thinking was threefold: (a) Administrators benefit from having a framework for intentionally factoring ethical perspectives and critical thinking into their decision making; (b) employees throughout the community college make decisions on a daily basis, and administrators must exercise leadership in teaching and modeling analytical and ethical decision-making skills; and (c) pressures to accomplish more with fewer resources may drive administrators and employees to rationalize decisions that compromise ethics and the institution. This framework contributes a promising analytical tool for guiding practitioners and graduate students in making decisions based on ethical analysis and critical thinking.
