Predictors of Academic Success in Language Arts Literacy and Math on State Assessments in New Jersey Charter Schools
Jerue, Gary A.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Widener University
There are a limited number of studies that examine the predictors of academic success in charter schools (Lawton, 2009). This study utilized a multiple regression analysis to identify the best predictors of academic success in language arts literacy (LAL) and math on state assessments in New Jersey charter schools. This study included four student predictor variables of ethnicity, percentage of students receiving free lunch, percentage of students receiving special education services, student mobility, and four school predictor variables including years in operation, per-pupil expenditures, teacher experience, and teacher mobility. These predictor variables were examined to determine the strength of their relationship with student achievement in LAL and math as measured by the New Jersey Assessment of Skills and Knowledge (NJ-ASK) in grades 3 through 8 and/or the High School Proficiency Assessment (HSPA) in grade 11 depending on the grade configuration of the individual school. Results from this study indicated that the percentage of students receiving free lunch, percentage of students receiving special education services, and years in operation were significant predictors of academic success in LAL and math over a three year period.
