DIY Services
Mallon, Melissa, Ed.
Public Services Quarterly, v10 n1 p11-21 2014
In the age of self-checkout machines and entire television networks devoted to do-it-yourself home improvement projects, the DIY ethic seems to be around to stay. The desire to be self-sufficient and use one's time more efficiently is hard to pass up, especially for busy academic librarians. This column is devoted to resources that not only help librarians do their own jobs more efficiently and effectively but also help students, faculty, and staff develop the skills they need to help themselves. The reviews cover tools that teach students critical evaluation and lifelong learning skills, provide support for librarians involved in collection development, instruction, and readers' advisory, and assist users with creating and curating information. In the spirit of DIY, readers are encouraged to explore these resources and try out the tools for themselves. The "Public Services Quarterly" Internet Resources Column is designed to be a clearinghouse for free, online websites; each column will focus on themes relevant to current issues in academic libraries and feature resources designed to make the lives of public services librarians easier. Web sites reviewed herein include: (1) Learnist (http://learni.st) (Reviewed by Kimberly Miller); (2) World Bank Data (http://data.worldbank.org/) (Reviewed by Annis Lee Adams); (3) What's Next[TM]: Books in Series Database (http://ww2.kdl.org/libcat/WhatsNext.asp) (Reviewed by Lauren Kelley); (4) Library DIY (http://library.pdx.edu/diy/) (Reviewed by Karen Evans); (5) TV News Search & Borrow (https://archive.org/details/tv) (Reviewed by Mark Daniel Robison); (6) Newstrust (http://newstrust.net) (Reviewed by Rachel W.
