Debating Robert Weissberg: Why We Should Read but Not Accept "Bad Students, Not Bad Schools"

This article presents the author's critique on Robert Weissberg's book titled "Bad Students, Not Bad Schools". The author argues that Weissberg's readable, controversial "Bad Students, Not Bad Schools" (2010) is funny, acerbic, bold, and slaughters more than a few sacred cows of what Weissberg calls the "failed educational industrial complex." As Weissberg boasts, he states what many others believe, but fear to speak aloud. That alone makes this an important book to read in order to understand the dark underbelly of public schooling. Unfortunately, chutzpa does not equal wisdom: One can be boldly wrong. The author asserts that "Bad Students, Not Bad Schools" is often on target, but equally often contradictory, intellectually lazy, and (arguably) racist. This is a book which should be widely read and debated, but only partly accepted. (Contains 2 notes.)
