This project incorporates technology and a historical emphasis on science drawn from ancient civilizations to promote a greater understanding of conceptual science. In the Apps for Ancient Civilizations project, students investigate an ancient culture to discover how people might have used science and math smartphone apps to make their lives easier. The project embodies the National Science Education Standards in that it allows students to "develop an understanding of what science is, what science is not, what science can and cannot do, and how science contributes to culture" (NRC 1996, p. 21). By incorporating technology into the study of science in ancient cultures, students learn to communicate, investigate problems, and apply their knowledge of science to real-world situations, thereby gaining an enduring understanding of science concepts and science processes.
