This article expands on the previous work of Maniaci, Poole, and Wilson by presenting a taxonomy based on the level of reliance for operations from annual giving and endowment payout. The authors anticipate that the taxonomy may be a useful means of increasing situational awareness for institutional decision makers. The authors offer possibilities for using the taxonomy to determine effectiveness and efficiency of fiscal management, selectivity in its admission process, and selection of a president. They also foresee its utility as a consideration in many other aspects of long-term strategic planning.
