Playing It Smart: Safety in Extracurricular Activities
Armenta, Tony
Clearing House: A Journal of Educational Strategies, Issues and Ideas, v84 n4 p155-159 2011
An integral part of the school experience for many students is involvement in extracurricular activities such as athletics, cheerleading, band, and others. Likewise, cocurricular activities, such as field trips, provide a chance for students to connect off-campus experiences to the material learned in the classroom. These types of activities, however, can turn catastrophic if schools are not conscientious with respect to providing prudent supervision and instruction. This article explores a school's and district's responsibilities for ensuring that safety precautions are in place to protect student participants as well as others. Not only do the recommendations contained within the article lessen the chance of successful negligence lawsuits, but, more importantly, they also help ensure that extracurricular and cocurricular activities, such important aspects of a school's culture, remain fun, educational, and, more importantly, safe.
