Horsin' Around
Henderson, Nancy
Exceptional Parent, v40 n5 p22-23 May 2010
In this article, the author shares how Haylee Hunt, an 18-year-old who was diagnosed to have cerebral palsy, proves that she can still live a normal life and be successful despite her disabilities, and narrates how Haylee develops her passion for horses. Friendly, outgoing and very determined, and bolstered by a supportive, nurturing family, Hunt attempted to do everything her older brother Korey did. Thankfully, a kindergarten teacher not only helped pave the way for Hunt's success in school but also promoted tolerance among the classmates she would grow up with in this small horse-farming town of 2,500. At age 8, Hunt balked at the idea of therapeutic riding on a "push-button pony"--a docile, beginner horse that waited for commands before moving--to increase her physical strength. But the instructor at nearby Peavine Creek Farm which offered lessons, trail rides, and horse training, treated her just like everyone else and she loved it. Three years later, her parents gave her Koko, a chocolate brown mare, as a Christmas present. Aside from riding her horses, she is also involved with volunteering and community work, and will be pursuing a radio broadcasting course in college.
