Grammar as a Gateway into Discourse: A Systemic Functional Approach to Subject, Theme, and Logic
Teruya, Kazuhiro
Linguistics and Education: An International Research Journal, v20 n1 p67-79 2009
The paper illustrates grammar as a meaning-making resource for early intermediate to advanced adult learners. It focuses on the environment of clause complexing, where different functions, such as Subject and Theme, are unified to construct a rhetorically oriented language logic. The paper suggests that learners' awareness of this logic offers a gateway into discourse by enabling them to "think grammatically". (Contains 4 figures and 2 tables.)
