Finding (and Keeping) School Governors: The Work of the School Governors' One-Stop Shop
Adams, John; Punter, Anne
Management in Education, v22 n4 p14-17 2008
The School Governor's One-Stop Shop (SGOSS) was established by the Department of Education and Employment in 1999. Its mission was to recruit volunteers from the business, industry and the public sector who had transferable management skills and experience in order to add value to the governing bodies of those inner-city schools facing the greatest challenges. The SGOSS initiative recognised the weight of the Industry in Education's research findings (Punter & Thody, 2000) identifying the added value that such governors could bring to inner-city schools. The SGOSS remit was subsequently widened and by October 2005 applied to all schools in England. This study was commissioned by SGOSS to review the experiences of the 3,390 governors recruited by them and who had been in post for more than one year. The objectives were to assess and evaluate the impact of SGOSS governors on their schools and to make some evaluation of their "value-added." In addition, an attempt was made to evaluate areas of personal and/or professional development for the governors themselves. (Contains 2 tables.)
