Lucci, William, Jr.
Techniques: Connecting Education and Careers, v80 n1 p32-36 Jan 2005
The Stafford Technical Center (STC) in Rutland, Vermont, operates with a mission statement that proudly touts its desire to "create a learning environment that promotes pride in work, a sense of self-worth and the ability to respect others by developing effective communication and life skills." Stafford acknowledges that these learning experiences do not necessarily occur within the four walls of the traditional school classroom; community service has become an important part of the curriculum of Stafford Technical Center. This article describes various community service projects undertaken by the students of the Technical Center, ranging from fabricating farm equipment for a needy local family to raising funds to help finance the technical education of five students in southern China.
