The Impact of Stressful Life Events and Social Support on Drinking among Older Adults: A General Population Survey.
Jennison, Karen M.
International Journal of Aging and Human Development, v35 n2 p99-123 1992
Analyzed stressful life events, buffering hypothesis, and alcohol use in 1,418 older adults. Results indicated that older adults who experienced stressful losses were significantly more likely to drink excessively than those who had not experienced such losses or who had experienced them to lesser extent. Supportive resources appeared to have stress-buffering effects that reduced excessive drinking. (Author/NB)
