Generic Pronouns and Sexist Language: The Oxymoronic Character of Masculine Generics.
Gastil, John
Sex Roles: A Journal of Research, v23 n11-12 p629-43 Dec 1990
Tests the hypothesis that the generic "he" contains male bias. Results suggest that generic "he" evokes disproportionately male images, as compared with plural "they," which appears to function more generically. Argues that this bias may reinforce sexist thought and behavior. (CJS)
