Interviews with 201 Blacks between the ages of 19 and 28 reveal that Blacks' gains in education attest to the effectiveness of concerted individual and community effort. The effects of the following factors are examined: (1) family socioeconomic status; (2) family structure; (3) family influence; (4) educational background; (5) school influence; (6) personal efficacy; and (7) mediating factors.
