Salaries in Universities and Colleges in 1920. Bulletin, 1920, No. 20
Bureau of Education, Department of the Interior
Undoubtedly the most critical question now before the university and college public is the question of salaries. The avowed purpose of many of the drives for additional funds for the support of the higher institutions is the increasing of the salaries of college officers and teachers. It is well known that the general level of such salaries is far below what it was 10 years ago. The cause of university and college teachers, for which administrators are now earnestly working, can undoubtedly be assisted very greatly by having at hand fairly complete information concerning the present status of salaries. In order that such information may be available, the Bureau of Education has collected and compiled data regarding salaries paid in 1919-20 by 401 universities and colleges. The institutions furnishing reports include a considerable number whose teaching staffs consist largely, in some cases entirely, of members of religious orders who do not receive salaries for their services. Such persons are not included in the summaries preceding the detailed statistics of individual institutions. Neither has it been possible to include in the summaries a considerable number of persons embraced in groups reported as receiving between certain minimum and maximum salaries. An examination of the statistical tables in this bulletin shows that the average salary for each position is higher in the public institutions than in the private institutions. This is due to the large number of small and weak institutions included in the latter class. Following a general statement on salaries in universities and colleges, the following topics are presented: (1) Summary of salaries of presidents; (2) Summary of salaries of deans and directors; (3) Summary of salaries of professors; (4) Summary of salaries of associate professors; (5) Summary of salaries of assistant professors; (6) Summary of salaries of instructors; (7) Summary of salaries of assistants; and (8) Detailed statistics of salaries paid by individual institutions in: (a) North Atlantic Division; (b) South Atlantic Division and Puerto Rico; (c) South Central Division; (d) North Central Division; and (e) Western Division and Hawaii.
